Fix Missing Teeth with Dental Bridges

Once you lose a tooth, it can be difficult to restore your oral health.

That’s why our dentists often recommend dental bridges and other treatment options to replace missing teeth. By replacing the missing tooth, you’ll prevent adjacent teeth from shifting toward the open space. In other words, a dental bridge is a possible solution for preventing future tooth loss.

What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental Bridges Wayland Coopersville Mi Dentists

A dental bridge is a prosthetic tooth that’s anchored by crowns on both sides for support. Together, the prosthetic tooth and crowns make up one restoration.
Our dentists can place these crowns on natural teeth or implants, depending on the circumstances of your case.

For example, the diagram on the right shows a dental bridge being placed over natural teeth that have been filed down to accommodate the bridge. Unlike dentures, your new dental bridge will be fixed in the mouth. This means that you won’t be able to remove it.

Instead, we securely bond the bridge in place so it remains stable as you eat, talk, and smile.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges

Your teeth are supported by the gums, jawbone, and adjacent teeth. This means that once you lose one tooth, your risk increases for losing more. The main benefit of getting a dental bridge is that you’re able to prevent teeth from drifting, loosening, and falling out.

One of the cons of dental bridges is that we may have to remove healthy tooth structure from adjacent teeth to accommodate the bridge. That’s why our dentists may instead recommend a dental implant or partial denture.

Each patient is different. To get a better idea of your treatment options, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists.
