ZOOM® Teeth Whitening

Do you have stained, yellowed, or discolored teeth?

Over time, the foods we eat and poor oral hygiene habits can lead to a dingier smile. Fortunately, teeth whitening can help! If at-home teeth whitening just isn’t cutting it, then Zoom® teeth whitening might be the answer. The ZOOM® teeth whitening process is a cost-effective, same-day teeth whitening procedure that achieves amazing results. Ask our team if ZOOM is right for you!

What Causes Tooth Stains?

Tooth stains are most commonly caused by lifestyle habits, such as smoking and tobacco. Some foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, soda, and red wine, can cause tooth discoloration with repeated use. Poor dental hygiene can also result in discolored teeth.

With our in-office Philips ZOOM® WhiteSpeed treatment, you can whiten your teeth by up to 8 shades. Before getting started, we’ll check the current shade of your teeth. That way, you’ll be able to notice the dramatic results in your smile. Many of our patients look forward to being able to smile with confidence for the first time in years.

Why Choose ZOOM®?

Group of three young women hugging and laughing in a parkZOOM® teeth whitening is quick and easy and can usually be done in under an hour. Our dentist will apply a whitening gel to your teeth, which is then activated by a special light that we have in our office. You can relax in the chair while the whitening gel gets to work lifting stains on your teeth.

You might notice some slight zings of sensitivity throughout the whitening procedure, but we’ll apply a sensitivity-reducing paste to your teeth immediately afterward so there will be no lasting discomfort. We’ll also send you home with a touch-up kit to help keep your teeth white between appointments.

Although most patients notice a major improvement after just one appointment, you might need to return to our office for further treatments in order to whiten your teeth to their desired shade. Our dentist will let you know what you can expect from the teeth whitening process.

Who is a good candidate for ZOOM® Whitening?

The ideal candidate for Zoom teeth whitening is an adult with surface-level stains. This would also be a person who takes good care of their teeth by brushing and flossing every day. Any cavities present would need to be treated prior to the Zoom whitening procedure to reduce sensitivity and ensure the overall health of your smile. Little to no tooth sensitivity is also ideal for someone seeking Zoom whitening treatment.

Who is not a good candidate for ZOOM® Whitening?

Children with baby teeth

Teeth whitening is not recommended for children because their adult teeth have yet to come in, but adults are welcome to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists and discuss their options. It’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted.

People with Fluorosis

People with a condition called Fluorosis may not be good candidates for ZOOM® Whitening. Fluorosis is a condition where an overconsumption of fluoride creates deep staining in the structure of the teeth themselves. The level of staining and mottling depends on the level of fluoride intake during the patient’s formative years when their adult teeth were developing in the jaw.

Due to the nature of this staining, Zoom teeth whitening won’t make a difference in the appearance of teeth. Under these circumstances, our cosmetic dentists may recommend porcelain veneers or crowns for teeth that show when you smile and talk.

People who suffer from tooth sensitivity

You may not be the best candidate for Zoom whitening if you experience tooth sensitivity. This is because it’s not uncommon for patients to experience “zingers” both during and after their whitening appointments. “Zingers” refer to brief flashes of pain that happen when the nerves inside your teeth react to the Zoom whitening procedure.

For patients who already have tooth sensitivity, teeth whitening can aggravate their condition and prolong their symptoms. Even if you don’t have tooth sensitivity, you may experience discomfort for up to two days after your appointment with us.

Most people don’t realize that their enamel is made up of microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerves inside your teeth. These nerves are sensitive to temperature changes, which explains why you may feel discomfort when drinking something hot or cold.

Zoom dental whitening works by deeply penetrating the enamel, which is the white outer layer of your teeth. Unfortunately, a side effect of this process is having other substances penetrate the enamel and affect the nerves within.

There are many different causes for tooth sensitivity, such as untreated cavities and teeth grinding at night. For this reason, our cosmetic dentists will always review your medical history before recommending a treatment plan that includes Zoom teeth whitening.

The ZOOM® Teeth Whitening Process

A Robinson Dental Staff member talking with a patient in an exam room about Zoom teeth whiteningFirst, one of our dentists or dental hygienists will cover your lips and gums to protect them from the whitening gel. Once your mouth is ready, the Zoom whitening gel will be applied to your teeth and activated with our WhiteSpeed blue LED lamp.

The whitening gel contains hydrogen peroxide, which oxidizes under the LED light and lifts tooth stains. The whole Zoom whitening procedure takes about 45 minutes but is broken up into three 15-minute sessions. After each session, more whitening gel will be added to your teeth before the LED light is turned back on.

During the sessions, you can relax and listen to music to pass the time. After you have completed the third session, a special fluoride gel is applied to your teeth to reduce sensitivity.

The whitening gel and varnish we use are specially formulated as to not irritate teeth and gums. Despite all our precautions, it’s still possible for a patient to experience quick instances of pain, often called “zingers” although not everyone does. If you experience pain during Zoom whitening, please do not hesitate to alert our dentists or dental assistants. You have the power to stop the procedure at any time if you feel the pain is too much. Different people have different pain tolerances and we understand it may be too much for some people.

At Home After Care

After your appointment, you will be given a kit that contains custom teeth whitening trays. The teeth whitening trays are for you to use at home so you can maintain your beautiful white smile.

Our dentists will also ask you to stay away from foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, such as coffee and red wine. For the rest of the day, you may experience brief flashes of pain that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Teeth Whitening At Home

Many people want whiter teeth, but not everyone has the time to spend multiple whitening appointments in the dentist’s chair. Depending on the extent of tooth discoloration, our dentists may be able to give you supplies so you can try whitening your teeth at home.

If this is the case, we will take impressions of your teeth to create a custom whitening tray that perfectly fits your teeth. Whitening teeth at home means you’ll be able to whiten your teeth when it’s most convenient for you.

While there are plenty of over-the-counter at-home whitening options, they aren’t as effective as professional teeth whitening. Over-the-counter whitening products can erode your tooth enamel and even make your teeth more sensitive in the long run. With our at-home whitening treatment, you can experience results that don’t damage your teeth.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. Over-the-Counter

If you’re interested in teeth whitening at home, you might have already looked into some of the over-the-counter teeth whitening options on the market. While over-the-counter whitening is affordable, it often brings with it a host of consequences that you won’t have to worry about with professional teeth whitening. Over-the-counter teeth whitening methods can contain harsh chemicals that erode your tooth enamel and make your teeth more sensitive over time. Whitening products containing charcoal can be harsh on your tooth enamel, wearing it away through the gritty texture.

In addition, over-the-counter teeth whitening products are simply not as potent as the teeth whitening you’ll find at a dentist’s office. Professional products contain stronger ingredients that lead to faster results. With over-the-counter whitening, you’ll end up paying more over time while still missing out on the smile of your dreams.

Our team can provide you with at-home whitening trays that give you professional results from the comfort of your own home. You’ll pick up the supplies from our office and can administer the whitening treatment at your convenience, easily lifting tooth discoloration. With take-home teeth whitening, you’ll see results after just one treatment without harming your oral health.
